Difficult times ahead for Goa Casinos

13 June 2013

The waters might be running wild in the years to come for live poker in India and casinos operating on the River Mandovi. A major blow has been inflicted to Goa´s Casino industry, after Goa´s chief minister, Mr. Manohar Parrikar, has clarified publicly his stand the industry. Nonetheless, he has used his personal Facebook account for the purpose, to put it on record and personally commit for the cause

Mr. Parrikar made the following statement:

"After 15 months of taking over as Chief Minister of the state, the journey has been full of ups and downs.. However, due to relentless efforts, Government has managed to implement most of the promised welfare schemes despite of drastic drop in revenue. While social media is a great medium to reach out to people, of late, it has been used by many, probably with vested interests to spread blatant lies. While I respect criticism based on facts, Facebook has increasingly become a medium to spread lies. Though I had ignored this in the past, the wrong information provided could be taken by many as truth in absence of facts. Through my updates, I will bring to you the activities and stand of the Government and also, the facts."

"A vicious campaign is currently being run about supposed change in stance by my Government on the issue of casino. I would like to put it on record that my stand on casinos has not changed. To put the things in perspective, let me point out the below facts/comments:
- 6 licenses were issued during Congress regime without following any procedure. I am firm in my stand that no new licenses will be issued by my Government. The actual number of operating offshore casinos has come down to 3.

- Due action has been taken on casinos not adhering to the rules and regulations One license has been cancelled and the ship is under process for confiscation by Tourism Department since it poses threat to the tourism in the state. The same will be towed away and auctioned as soon as final order is issued by the statutory authority concerned.

- About the highly debated and publicized Horseshoe casino, please note that it is only a vessel. Permission for starting of casino has been rejected.

What is surprising is that despite of clarification, which is already in public domain through media, some publicity seekers with vested interests have chosen to spread blatant lies with regards to the Government’s stand on the issue. I am sure this clarification will set record straight."

Very bad timing specially for Delta Corps - Casino Royale, just when they were about to move to a new ship - the brand new casino (Delta Corps. MV Horseshoe). Really surprising since more than one month ago Delta Corps had already made a press release, announced it on newspapers, and even started hiring processes for the new vessel.

Do we, the general public, know everything that is going on behind the scenes?... probably not, and never will... however, Goa government seems to be consistent with its electoral promises back in 2012.

Only time will tell us which of this two powerfull groups ends up on top, but in any case, this are bad news for poker in India, since Goa was the main destination in the country to play the game.

It seems reasonable to think that with this scenario in live poker in India, more and more people will start looking at the online arena... Has the time arrived for central government to look at a proper and fair pan-india online gaming regulation?.
