Operations of casinos in Kathmandu resumed within a week of the earthquake, despite the devastating 7.9 Richter scale quake which occurred on April25th. Casino Mahjong, Hotel Crown Plaza, Soaltee, MD Binod Shrestha confirmed that operations of the hotel and casino had been resumed. He also stated that hotels and casinos in the region had rushed to provide aid and relief immediately following the earthquake.

He said that the Casino Mahjong Team were among the first responders following the quake to regions of Gorkha, Saakhu and Sindhupalchowk. The Hotel has decided to adopt the village of Saakhu and is working to get the village back on its feet. “ I wish to tell the World that Nepal’s beauty and hospitality remains unshaken through the crisis.” He wishes to set an example and believes, together, Nepal will conquer this and be back on its feet.

He also added that “Casinos, hotels, restaurants and business has all resumed and are operational within a week of the quake. We are back to normal and all we need is continued support and patronage to this beautiful country. Faith in this country is high and the people are strong, we can and will take care of our visitors and patrons.”

Old casinos in Kathmandu such as the Casino Royale and Casino Shangrila have restarted its operations. The website of the Casino Shangrila Resort run by the Silver Heritage Group has also proclaimed the same message declaring its open commitment to help those afflicted by the earthquake. The firm has declared its commitment to face difficulties and get back on its feet while trying to the best of its abilities to help victims. “Happy World and Silver Heritage has sent out 8000Kg of relief supplies to the epicentre of the earthquake, which is located in Gorka. We plan to continue our efforts by sending medical supplies and food donations. A percentage of the net income has also been set aside to help and aid relief operations once re-opened to help the community and earthquake victims.”

Political instability across the Himalayan region has dealt a blow to the casinos of Nepal. Tussles with the government and taxation concerns had led many of these casinos to shut down in the past. Concessions from the government helped these casinos restart in later months. Nepal continues to strive towards rebuilding itself and casinos have made a commendable effort toward achieving this goal. One hopes that the Nepalese economy and also the rehabilitation efforts will continue to remain strong with support from so many continuing in the face of the calamity.
