Centre says will intervene only if online rummy for stakes is declared legal

 The Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that there was no need to intervene and take a stand as of now on whether online rummy should be legalised or not.
Appearing for the government, additional solicitor general LN Rao told a bench headed by justice FMI Kalifulla that the Central government would step in only if the SC reversed the Madras High Court judgment and held the online gaming as legal.

 The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought the Centre’s response on whether online rummy and card games involving stakes fall under gambling or are these just tests of skill, as a part of the ongoing case filed by Mahalakshmi Cultural Association. 
 
A bench headed by Justice FMI Kalifullah asked ASG L Nageshwar Rao to clarify the Centre’s stand on the regulatory mechanism in place to oversee such games by September 25, the next date of hearing.

 Mahalakshmi Cultural Association, a Chennai based club filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court against an adverse Madras High Court ruling that prohibited playing of rummy for stakes; the Supreme Court on 12th and 13th August 2014 finally heard the submissions of the petitioners (Mahalakshmi Cultural Association,online rummy companies Head Infotech Ltd, Play Games 24×7 Pvt Ltd and other rummy clubs). According to a report in Economic Times, a division bench comprising of Justices MI Khalifullah and Shiva Kirti Singh heard submissions of Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal (also former Union Law Minister) and Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi  (also senior Member of Parliament and Congress leader) appearing for the petitioners and raised concerns about gambling addiction and degree of skill involved in the game of rummy.
