SportingBet will pay 17Million in retroactive taxes

Just yesterday we reported that bwin.party would pay € 33 million to the "Ministerio de Hacienda" (Spanish Finance), for prior tax years that the Spanish government now claims. Now is Sportingbet (ParadisePoker) to announce the payment of such taxes.

Payment according to Sportingbet "greatly increases the chances of getting a gaming license in Spain." The assignment of the first gaming licenses is scheduled for June 1st.

In the Sportingbet statment we can still read that: "get a online gambling license in Spain marks the next step in our strategy to increase the proportion of gaming revenue of the Group in regulated markets."

The amount is € 17,200,000, and corresponds to € 14 million of tax arrears (January 2009 to May 2011) and € 3.2 million in interest.

The site eGaming Review says that other large companies in the online game - 888, Betfair and PokerStars - are also in talks with the” Ministerio de Hacienda” to pay taxes retroactively. PokerStars may have to pay around € 200 million.
