The October Nine - Andras Koroknai

23 July 2012

Andras Koroknai is the first Hungarian player ever to reach a final table of the Main Event of the WSOP®.

Born in Debrecen (Hungary), he graduated for computer engineering in Debrecen University. However, he left his studies to become a professional poker player, activity that he devotes to for six years now.

Among his poker successes before this year Main Event, we can highlight his win at LA Poker Classic in 2010, that gave him a prize of 1,7 million de dollars, and 2 cashes in the WSOP 2010: one of 36.463$ in Event 57 No-Limit Hold'em Championship and another of 2.908$ in Event 30 No-Limit Hold'em.

Koroknai reaches the final table after bursting out in the FT bubble the French player Gaelle Baumann. And by curiosity due to a mistake of the management of the Main Event, his elimination was avoided in a hand precisely against Gaelle a couple of hours before.

In the hand in question, Gaelle Baumann raised 60.000 pre-flop in early position. It seems that, Koroknai did not see the French player raise and being on the SB, raise 2 million. The player in the BB quickly folds and before Bauman could say anything, Koroknai, seeing her intention of paying the raise, decided to get the cards back from the muck, so that the dealer could not recover them... Baumann showed Pocket kings. Jack Effel (the maximum authority in the Main Event) had to intervene and decided that Koroknai just lose the 60.000 chips, and not the 2 million that he had. In such situations, as it’s not a dealer mistake, the player that does the mistake will lose the hand and all the chips in the hand. So, Koroknai was already supposed to have been eliminated from the tournament without even getting to showdown.

In one interview to PokerNews after reaching the final table, Koroknai said: “I’m very happy for getting this far. I wanted to play now, can’t wait till October. I feel I have nothing to lose and i’m very motivated to keep fighting”. The tough Hungarian will not stop until the main event restarts: “I’m going to try to improve my game and probably will play an EPT. Also will work on my English”.
